Why this role matters
Where the work sits relative to real sourcing and menu decisions.
This role sits inside Foodbuy, a large food procurement organisation running tenders and commercial recommendations across many categories for Compass Group's clients — real sourcing decisions pass through desks like this one. But the advert doesn't say which categories you'd work on, so there's no way to tell yet whether your remit would ever touch meat, dairy, eggs or seafood buying criteria, where welfare standards or protein-mix decisions actually get set. What this role clearly offers is grounding: end-to-end tendering, supplier commercial analysis, and category market knowledge inside one of the UK's largest food procurement operations. If you can steer or later move into a meat, dairy, egg or seafood category within Foodbuy or a similar organisation, that's where this kind of sourcing seat starts to carry real weight over animal outcomes — this role is best understood as the training ground for that move, not the lever itself.
About the role
This is a Strategic Sourcing Buyer role within Foodbuy, Compass Group UK & Ireland's food procurement arm, described as a £2bn+ organisation delivering category expertise and sourcing solutions to clients across the UK & Ireland. The postholder joins the Strategic Sourcing team to deliver end-to-end sourcing projects in line with the Foodbuy Procurement Framework, running compliant tender processes using eSourcing tools, analysing supplier bids, and building commercial comparisons to support robust recommendations. The role works closely with Category, GPO (Group Procurement Organisation), Account and Supply Chain teams to ensure sourcing activity aligns with client needs, market dynamics and business priorities across cost, quality, service, sustainability and risk. Responsibilities span five areas: sourcing delivery (end-to-end projects across a range of categories, tender processes, bid analysis, savings/quality/service outcomes); stakeholder engagement (partnering with internal teams, providing insight for decision-making, building supplier relationships); market and commercial insight (developing category market knowledge, gathering market intelligence, supporting price and risk discussions); process and governance (ensuring compliance, maintaining documentation and audit trails, contributing to process improvement); and value tracking and reporting (savings validation, pipeline and performance reporting). Essential requirements are experience in procurement, sourcing or commercial roles (ideally within foodservice, retail or FMCG), strong analytical skills, a good understanding of sourcing and tendering processes, commercial awareness with attention to detail, confident stakeholder communication, and organisational skills to manage multiple priorities. Desirable criteria include exposure to eSourcing platforms such as Scanmarket, understanding of category management or supply chain, and CIPS qualification or progress towards it. The advert markets the role as offering exposure to strategic procurement environments and leading clients, and the development of commercial expertise within Foodbuy. The location is listed as Hybrid/London/Chertsey, working 40 hours per week within Central Functions.

How to position yourself
The language that lands with hiring managers in this kind of role.
Position yourself around commercial rigour and process discipline — cost, quality, service and risk are the exact axes this advert names, so lead with examples of running compliant tender processes, analysing bids, and building clear commercial comparisons. Building CIPS qualification (explicitly desirable here) and familiarity with eSourcing platforms like Scanmarket will strengthen your case, and if you can steer toward categories including meat, dairy, eggs or seafood once in post, flag that as a development interest early.
Applications are handled entirely by the employer — this board links you to their original posting and doesn't collect your details.
