Why this role matters
Where the work sits relative to real sourcing and menu decisions.
This is a real category buying seat — developing procurement strategy, negotiating supplier contracts, and setting vendor performance standards for the raw materials and packaging behind chutneys, mayonnaise and dressings sold to major UK retailers and restaurant chains. The advert doesn't name which categories you'd own, so it's not possible to say from this listing whether egg, dairy or other animal-derived ingredients fall under your remit — mayonnaise production often does involve egg sourcing, but that's not stated here. What this role reliably builds is the harder-to-get skillset: category strategy, supplier negotiation, vendor rating and joint improvement plans at a manufacturer supplying national retail. Those are the exact tools someone would need a few years later in a seat where the categories are meat, dairy or plant protein, and where a supplier standard actually reaches an animal. Worth applying to with that longer game in mind rather than expecting this specific role to be the lever.
About the role
English Provender Company (EPC), maker of chutneys, mayonnaise and salad dressings for UK retailers, quick service restaurants and food manufacturers (including the Very Lazy and Newman's Own brands), is hiring a Senior Buyer in the Procurement department, reporting to the Purchasing Manager. The role's main purpose is ensuring the company purchases raw materials and packaging cost-effectively and to appropriate quality standards. Responsibilities include becoming a market expert in allocated categories, representing the purchasing team at business-critical meetings, developing procurement category strategies for allocated spend areas, and implementing procurement strategies to maintain security of supply. The role negotiates supplier contracts on total cost and service, forecasts price and market trends to track shifts in buyer/supplier power, and tracks and reports key functional metrics to reduce costs and improve effectiveness. It manages vendor performance through vendor rating, acting on poor performance, and runs joint improvement plans and cross-functional quarterly reviews with key suppliers. The postholder promotes supplier innovation to the wider business, develops relationships with business stakeholders and strategic supply partners, follows escalation processes for risks to production or customer service, works on working capital reduction projects (extending payment terms, reducing slow-moving and redundant stock), and delivers agreed PIPS (price increase/productivity improvement projects, as commonly abbreviated in this context) within budget while identifying value opportunities from allocated categories. No specific essential or desirable qualifications are listed in the advert. Benefits include 31 days holiday, free parking, an Employee Assistance Programme, bereavement leave, company events, employee events, free flu jabs, life insurance, a referral programme, sick pay, a wellness programme, company pension, free/discounted products and a discounted EV charger scheme. No work arrangement, contract type or closing date is stated.

How to position yourself
The language that lands with hiring managers in this kind of role.
Position your interest around total cost of ownership, supply security and vendor risk management — the language this advert already uses. Building fluency in supplier negotiation, vendor performance metrics and category strategy here is a strong platform for CIPS accreditation and for later moves into categories with higher-stakes ethical sourcing requirements.
