Raw Material Technologist
Mowi Scotland · Rosyth, Dunfermline
Our estimate of how close this job is to decisions about what protein a business sources, specifies, buys and serves. How we score
Why this role matters
How close this job is to real sourcing and menu decisions.
Mowi is one of the world's largest salmon farming companies, and this role sits inside the technical function that approves, audits and manages the raw materials and suppliers feeding its production. That means the specifications, non-conformance investigations and supplier audits you work on apply to a live farmed-fish supply chain. A Raw Material Technologist doesn't set welfare or sourcing policy, but the documentation, risk assessments and audit participation that pass across this desk are exactly the infrastructure through which standards get enforced, including welfare standards. Get good at this and you build fluency in how a major seafood producer actually controls what goes into its supply chain, and to what standard. Three to five years in a seat like this, inside BRCGS and HACCP systems at scale, is a credible route toward more senior technical or supplier-standards roles where criteria on welfare, sourcing or supply chain resilience could actually be written into specs rather than just checked against them.

These roles typically hold sign-off over supplier approval criteria and audit requirements, giving more direct influence over the standards a farmed-seafood supply chain is actually held to.

How to position yourself
The language that works with hiring managers for this kind of job.
Frame your interest around food safety, quality and supply-chain risk management, the language this advert itself uses (compliance, non-conformance investigation, supplier optimisation). Worth building familiarity with BRCGS and HACCP (both named in the advert) and, if you can, some exposure to raw material risk assessment methodology, since that's the technical credibility this track rewards.
